Epilepsy is "a disorder in which nerve cell activity in the brain is disturbed causing seizures" (Mayo Clinic). If you or someone you know has epilepsy or begins to have a seizure, it's crucial you know what steps to take.
Seizure First Aid (from the Epilepsy Foundation)
Stay with the person until they are awake and alert after the seizure. Time the seizure. Remain calm. Check for a medical ID.
Keep the person safe. Move or guide them away from harm.
Turn the person onto their side if they are not awake and aware. Keep airway clear, loosen tight clothes around neck, and put something soft and small under the head.
Call 911 if the seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes, person does not return to their usual state, person is injured, pregnant, or sick, there are repeated seizures, this is their first time having a seizure, difficulty breathing, or if the seizure occurs in water.
DO NOT restrain the person or put any objects in their mouth. Rescue medications can be given if prescribed by a health care professional.
